Only 45% of Americans have an active passport and many rookies (like me) have experienced the agony of canceling a trip all because we forgot to renew in time.
These tips also apply for Canadian Passport, and I'm sure many other countries.
Another tip-
If you live in North America, go the extra distance and get your NEXUS / Trusted Traveler card as well. It will save you time at airport security leaving home as well as shorter lines returning.
Some extra benefits include waiving liquid restrictions, no need for show removal and laptop opening. Not all airports have the new scanners.
my son turned 5 and his is within the 6 month expiration window. he is 3 months old in his passport pic! for kids, both parents have to be present at the post office, with all documents in tow. family outing to the post office, here we go.
Sherpa is a great resource to check if the country you are travelling to requires an additional visa or has any restrictions. One big hot tip---if you are travelling in Africa be sure to check the Yellow Fever immunization requirements. If you are raveling from or transiting (for >12 hours) through the airport of a country with risk for yellow fever virus transmission. Keep wandering, Justin! I usually lose a few months on my passport each renewal because I'm leery of how quickly it will be returned. https://apply.joinsherpa.com/travel-restrictions
Great reminder!

Oh those are good additional tips! Thank you! 😊
Thanks for the advice. I've never had a passport and had no idea.

Great advice Jules! I will be checking this out. Thank you!
Absolutely important to renew before the 6-month mark. Thanks for the information, Justin!
Absolutely! 😊
Mine expired 30 years ago! Now I’m retired and in the process of renewing it.
What a bummer about your trip, my plan is for Ireland next spring.
Oh perfect! Yeah, it was unfortunate but I’m headed there this fall so really looking forward to that. Congrats on retirement! Happy travels!
